The winery and the wines
Craftsmanship and nature are at the heart of Terreno. We have been working organically since 2014 and today we also adapt elements of biodynamic practices. Our values are reflected in everything we do, from field to bottle. In the winery we take care of the grapes we have been following throughout the year with the aim to help them to become the best they can - without altering their character. This means a gentle hand and the utmost care, because when making artisanal wines there are no shortcuts.
All grapes are harvested by hand in small baskets and in the winery, there is a second selection on our sorting table. Only the best grapes make it into the cellar. We only use natural yeast to start the fermentation and for the wines made for long ageing, the fermentation takes place in open 700 litre vessels for more complexity. Instead, temperature-controlled steel tanks are used for wines with a fruitier character. We only use 1000 litre barrels for ageing our wines, a way to keep the fruit character and not risk too much of oak flavour in the wine. The selection of barrels is made with a cooper who has the same approach to craftmanship as Terreno.
Our goal is to create a natural balance between our surroundings and those who live and work at Terreno - and make wines that express their terroir.
The wine region Chianti Classico, situated between the renaissance cradle of Florence and medieval Siena, has in a short period of time evolved from making table wine to becoming one of Italy’s most quality minded wine regions. At Terreno we are grateful to be a part of Chianti Classico and to be allowed to use the Black Rooster, Il Gallo Nero, on our bottles.
The wine region is one of the most ancient in the world and without a doubt one of the most beautiful ones. The sensitive grape Sangiovese thrives on these forest clad rolling hills among olive groves and vines. A grape which, when taken well care of, expresses its surroundings beautifully. Therefor it is possible to produce different wines with different nuances all varying in style and character.
Terreno Chianti Classico DOCG
Our flagship wine, the Chianti Classico, is the pillar upon which the rest of our production chain rests. This wine has the important task of conveying terreno's deep roots and establishment in Chianti Classico, which it achieves with humble simplicity despite its strong character.
Terreno Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG
A selection of our best grapes are used for this Chianti Classico Riserva. Aged in large oak barrels (12, 24 and 32 *hl*) which gives a tighter and spicier profile, enabling it to age well for many years.
Terreno Chianti Classico Riserva Sillano DOCG
Sillano is situated near the medieval village of Montegioralle. It’s a place where the vineyards are situated at high altitude, 500 metres above sea level. This vineyard with chalk rich soil presents us with an elegant single vineyard wine where nerve and finesse merge in harmony.
Terreno A Sofia Chianti Classico DOCG
Aged for 30 months in large oak barrels, this limited edition is only produced when a vintage is good enough. A Sofia is our cru, from our oldest vineyard planted at the beginning of the 1980’s.
Our additional wines
To create a stronger and a more personal identity we make other wines than Chianti Classico. At Terreno we grow a small number of international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot among the red, and Roussanne and Petit Manseng among the white. They complement our range of products, from fresh and fruity everyday wines to age worthy wines that last over time.
Il Momento Toscana IGT
Terreno Il Momento is a red wine that does not like to be kept waiting. This wine’s strongest trait is its juiciness, that of a young Sangiovese. Il Momento is round and light hearted and is suitable for most occasions.
Momento Massimo Toscana IGT
Momento Massimo is our deep and mellow “super Tuscan”. It’s produced from a mix of Bordeaux grapes and is aged for 24 months in barriques and tonneaux, the bottle is then stored for at least 2 years.
Rosato di Toscana IGT
We like to consider our rosé wine a light and gracious wine without being common. It is well suited both as aperitif or with food. It is light, fresh and really quaffable.
Bianco di Stella Toscana IGT
This is a white wine made from local grape varieties and prefers discretion rather than impressing with strong aromas. A wine that slowly but surely gains ground with a fresh honesty. A perfect aperitif.
Bianco Professore Toscana IGT
A vineyard with sandy soil presents the grapes petit manseng and roussane (and a small amount of Malvasia and Trebbiano). An ambitious and complex white wine, which ferments and ages in big barrel to be able to live a long life.
Terreno Metodo Classico
Our sparkling vintage is produced with the classic method and is aged for at least six years on its yeast. Our surprising Blanc de Noirs, made from 100% Sangiovese, is produced in a limited edition and destined for life’s festive highlights.
Terreno Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC and Grappa
Terreno’s Vin Santo is made from partially air dried grapes. Alongside our grappa, which is distilled from the press residues of our Sangiovese grapes these two makes a perfect ending to a delightful meal.
